Originally created as the Army Air Corps in 1926
with the primary purpose of supporting ground forces.
It became the (mostly) autonomous aviation arm of the Army in 1941
and was renamed the United States Army Air Force.
Its Commanding General Harold "Hap" Arnold reported directly to the
Chief of Staff of the United States Army General George C. Marshall.
In turn it became the independent United States Air Force in 1947.
