Symbolism
A common practice during World Wars 1 and 2, a banner was hung in the front window
of a family's home with a Blue Star for each son or daughter from that family serving in the military.
In the unfortunate event of their child's death, the Blue Star was replaced with a Gold Star letting
every family in the neighborhood know that they had laid the ultimate sacrifice on the Alter of Liberty.
Although the Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Mothers organizations still exist,
the practice was not carried forward much from the conclusion of World War 2.
